Hypothalamus

A neural structure in the brain lying below the thalamus. It directs several maintenance activities, helps govern the endocrine system through the pituitary gland (the point where the nervous system intersects with the endocrine system), and plays a role in maintaining homeostasis in the body (sleep, body temperature, sexual behavior, thirst and hunger). It is the control center for many autonomic functions of the peripheral nervous system. It is also part of the limbic system.
