RESEARCH (2013-current)

Widener University – Currently in the midst of research of sex ratios in Branchinecta lindahli with Dr. Janice Krumm, an Evolutionary biology/zoolology professor.

The purpose of this research is to support Ronald Fisher’s principle of equilibrium in a sexually reproducing species that has a sex ratio of males to females 1:1. B. lindahli has a sex ratio distorter that turns genetic males into phenotypic females and are fully functional as females. Genetic males and feminized males thus far, can only be distinguished by their offspring sex ratios. Experimentation involves observing these ratios over generations, and according to the Fisher principle the ratio would move to 1:1 from our initial 4:1.
This research enables critical thinking skills, documenting progress, analysis of results and data, and how to present the learned data to the public.

Fox Chase Cancer Center – worked full-time with Dr. Joseph Testa and Dr. Craig Menges’ team over the summer for six weeks as a lab assistant/student helping with the research of malignant mesothelioma, specifically with the investigation of the tumor suppressor NF2 gene product merlin interacting with different metabolic enzymes that are important in cancer cell metabolism.
The following techniques involved in gathering the interaction data needed to be learned and perfected in a research laboratory setting: the nano drop, growing and splitting LP9 cells, western blotting, and PCR.
